A Fine Frenzy, aka Alison Sudol, really is one of the most exciting solo female talents around at the moment and she is back this week with her third solo album.
But Pines is completely different to anything that she has done before as she has delivered a concept album that really reads like a fable.
This is a stunning album from start to finish and each track is a self contained and absolutely beautiful song - it is great to see an artist have the confidence to make an album like this.
Pinesong is the opening track on the album is an acoustic song that is light on production and really lets Sudol’s vocals take centre stage.
Winds of Wander is the best track on the album as it opens with bird song before the delicate twang of the guitar kicks in.
This is a mesmerising track from start to finish as the guitar and the piano come together to support Sudol’s soft vocal so wonderfully.
Avalanches is a song that has a real atmosphere to it and that is largely thanks to the constant beat that runs throughout it.
Sudol’s shows off her range and there is a real power in the quiet moments of this track as she sings about promising to be there for someone.
There is not a single weak track on this album as Sudol creates a very vivid picture with each and every song.
Pines is an album of self reflection and the songs are almost like a stream of consciousness that we are intruding on by listening to - and that makes the album such a fabulous listen.
Granted the abstract nature of the record may not be to everyone’s taste but it really is fantastic album with music that you really can connect with.
A Fine Frenzy reinvents herself as a musician with this album and I hope she continues down this intriguing path - this is a record that is not to be missed.
