It was back in 2010when Helen Dooley aka The Cheek Of Her burst onto the music scene and now she is back with her second EP Megaphonic.
She always has been a feisty female and has a no nonsense to her music and that trend continues wit this collection of tracks - especially the opening song.
Beauty Queen is the first track on the EP and it is a song is for all strong women out there and talks about being comfortable in your own skin and not having to conform to the images and ideas of women that are projected into society.
It is a hook laden track that is incredibly catchy and it really is a perfect bit of pop that does deliver a great message of empowerment.
Something Out Of Nothing has an acoustic opening as Dooley’ vocal is supported by just a piano until the pop beat kicks in.
Then this track goes from pop to more of a rock edge and it is not like you run of the mill love song. Dooley shows off the power of her voice with this track as it really is a fine vocal from the singer/songwriter.
Yes, It’s A Love Song follows in the same vein as the previous track and is a rather unconventional love song. But it has a driving beat and, much like the rest of this EP, it is incredibly infectious.
Bog Standard Heartburn is the rockiest track on the EP and the best song in this five track collection.
Dooley really packs a range of emotions into this track from pain to anger as she sings about heartbreak in a rather unique way.
The Swell rounds off the EP and while it is my least favourite track on the record it does continue to show off Dooley’s excellent vocal.
Helen Dooley is a singer/songwriter that knows how to write a great pop track and yet there is a darkness to her that sets her apart from other female musicians around at the time.
