If ever a name defined a band it is now. Essex quartet The Brights are exactly that, a bright injection of sunshine breathing a fresh lease of life into the often colourless indie genre.
Original, up-tempo tracks on their debut album A Trivial Pursuit are reminiscent of eighties bands such as The Housemartins and The Style Council with lead singer David Burgess at times echoing the style of Paul Heaton faithfully, minus the witty, sardonic lyrics.
With the bands current single A Cameo Can’t Last Forever, The Brights have gained the support of 6 Music’s Chris Hawkins and XFM’s John Kennedy as well as BBC Radio 2’s Janice Long who recorded a live session with the band.
While they are firmly rooted in the indie-pop genre The Brights’ toe-tapping tunes are free of arrogance and swagger and are unashamedly optimistic which, while refreshing, is unlikely to gain them many fans amongst the indie-kids.
While The Brights are undoubtedly doing something a little bit different against anything currently dominating the airwaves, they are not breaking any new ground and are not particularly memorable.
They do however show promise, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if we heard more of The Brights in another album’s time.
Verdict: 3/5
