Taking Back Sunday are back with their punchy punk rock sound in the form of new EP, Faith (When I Let You Down).
The EP acts as a teaser for their upcoming album and includes the new single Faith (When I Let You Down), El Paso and an exclusive 2011 acoustic version of their hit single Great Romances Of The 20th Century, which was originally released off the 2002 album Tell All Your Friends.
Faith (When I Let You Down) is lyrically typical of Taking Back Sunday songs, with dark meanings and feelings of desperation convayed throughout the track. But this time the music is more upbeat and lively than previous songs. This song echos similarities to their earlier material from their first album, and sees the band return to, arugably, what was considered their best.
El Paso continues the similarities to earlier material with Adam Lazzara, the lead vocalist, screaming the chorus rather like he did in the single Liar (It Takes One To Know One) from the 2006 album Louder Now. The screeching guitar turns El Paso in to a hard rock, energetic, in your face track that's bound to please fans of the earlier albums.
The new rendition of Great Romances Of The 20th Century is slightly disappointing. Lazzara's voice is too strained and, honestly, the other band member's backing vocals are better in this performance. Fans of the band's earlier music won't care for this version, but maybe it was done to show that the band are returning to their musical roots for their fifth studio album.
This EP is classic Taking Back Sunday, with a mix of fast paced yet dark numbers, fiercely heavy guitar anthems and the occasional downbeat track. If the album is anything like this teaser, then it will no doubt win back the fans they lost to last album New Again, which is said to have been a disappointment to fans and the band themselves.
Faith (When I Let You Down) is out now, and the band's new self-titled album will be released on 28th June.
