I am quite happy to admit that I’m a little to young to remember Toni Braxton when she was around back in the 1990’s and ‘Unbreak My Heart’ is the only track I actually recognise from the list of achievements on the press release sent with this single.
I know a lot of die heard Toni Braxton fans will probably hate me for saying this, but I think her new single ‘Yesterday’ sounds quite like something Jordin Sparks would release. It’s diva-esque chorus really blows me away, so much so that I end up turning up the volume with each play.
It’s the kind of song that would blast out towards the end of a movie, when the two lead characters realise they are madly in love with each other, but one of them just happed to be getting on board a plane / train / boat at that very moment, leading to the pair of them rushing towards each other in a mad will they/wont they dash.
The video for the single is amazing too, Toni looks out of this world for a 41-year old woman and I can honestly say, if I had a figure like that now, at 22, I would be over the moon. Although, I’m not really feeling the whole Frankie Sandford from The Saturdays look which pops up towards the centre of the video, it really doesn’t do her much justice.
I can see it doing quite well in the chart rundown this Sunday, however, the remix of the track, featuring Trey Songz almost lets the song down a little with far less emphasis on the powerful choruses, making it more of a sweet love song between a man and a woman.
To be honest with you, the remix is quite a beautiful track on it’s own, but having listened to the ‘official’ version first, I can’t help but be disappointed by the lack of a kick from the second offering.
