The Pigeon Detectives

The Pigeon Detectives

Just when it seemed that indie music was being left collecting dust at the bottom of our iTunes playlists, a host of talent old and new have begun to emerge and re-emerge with new material, with The Strokes, as always, setting the trend.

Done in Secret is the first single to proceed The Pigeon Detectives new album, Up, Guards and at 'Em! which is out next month.

The album is the third instalment from the Yorkshire five piece who served up delights such as the exceptionally catchy Take Her Back back in the indie heyday of 2007, and if you're keen to relive those Red Stripe fuelled days, then Done in Secret will have you digging out your converse before Sir Philip Green can say Trilby.

Unlike the Godfather's of indie that are The Strokes, who returned with a new single and a new sound last month, The Pigeon Detectives don't seem to have progressed at all in the couple of years they have been off the radar.

When they first appeared on the scene we could forgive the group of barely post-pubescent lads for having as much depth as a puddle and singing about their excitement to take girls home, but five years on we all would like to see a hint of maturity and a nod towards development.

Lyrically, Done in Secret seems to have been born out of obscurity and the vocals from frontman Matt Bowman indicate little time has been spent on moving the band forward.

The strength in the single comes from the lead guitar, in which lies the catchy melody that keeps the likes of The Pigeon Detectives above water.

It's strength is re-enforced by the inclusion of an instrumental version of the track on the single's release, "just in case you didn't like the lyrics, here it is without them" or perhaps The Pigeon Detectives are just saving the Channel 4 producers the effort should they choose to overlay the track on a trailer for the next series of The Inbetweeners, or Skins or whatever the latest hormone fuelled serving is.

Unoriginal as the single is, The Pigeon Detectives do demonstrate their musical abilities with Done in Secret and, as it's quite clear the band haven't, fans are encouraged not to over think things too much.

Take it for what it is, music to drunkenly flail about to on a Friday night, only to find yourself humming it all day Saturday and asking no one in particular "What is that song?"

Up, Guards and at 'Em! is released on 4 April. The Pigeon Detectives will be touring throughout March and April.

Verdict: 3/5
