Status Quo, after four decades, has finally jumped on the Christmas song bandwagon. And indeed, it talks of snow and chestnuts by the fire, with a euphoric build up towards a final chorus in which, you guessed it, a child choir sings along.
Taking the medal for their 75th UK single, an impressive accomplishment, the single is unfortunately uninspired, unimaginative and completely generic. Arguably so many other Christmas releases are the same. But whether or not Itâs Christmas Time can compete with the X Factorâs single is debatable.
There is a definite similarity to two of their classic hits, Whatever You Want and Rockinâ All over the World, which were both released over 30 years ago. Some say that their music is timeless, which singles like these are, but when released in 2008, a sprinkle of inventiveness is really needed to make any sort of impact.
Saying that however, they are certainly aware of the vast fan base they have acquired over the years and are cleverly catering for that audience releasing the single on Vinyl, as well as on CD and download release.
Itâs Christmas Time is another holly jolly single to add to a compilation when opening pressies, but is likely to be overshadowed by bolder classics from the likes of Slade or Mariah Carey.
