Okay, so first of all, we have to acknowledge the fact that Pete ‘crack head’ Doherty has changed his name to Peter - or maybe just decided to use his full name - in what could be a bid to make us take him more seriously, or perhaps fool us into thinking it’s someone else completely.
Anyway, that said, as a music journalist I should look past the track marks in his arms and give Pete, sorry, Peter, the honest review he deserves… the fact that I didn’t really like Babyshambles might stand against me here.. But when he performed in the gig venue I used to work at he was a top bloke, and being quite fit (I know I shouldn’t) I really fell for his musical charms.
So, the question is, is this a song about little miss Kate Moss, who is not exactly what my mum would class as an ‘English Rose’? I think that particular term is more applicable to Kate Winslet than cocaine-snorting Model Moss… but lyrics, “She spilt the lager, toasting girls of great beauty” would suggest as much.
Anyway, the song itself encapsulates everything we love Peter for, he ‘sings’ the song in his ever so doleful, drawn out way, sounding like he’s drunk or stoned or whatever you describe those indie kids voices’ like. Although with Pete, he most probably is.
Nevertheless, this single is one euphoric anthem to be sang along to at great volume, wherever you are, as much as we might want to laugh at him, Pete has picked himself up, dusted himself off and took everything that was great with the Libertines and Babyshambles and made it into a really great ‘comeback’ song.
I love the simplicity of the lyrics which in turn, say so much without saying much at all, and the shake of a tambourine, the kick of a bass drum and the strumming of an acoustic guitar really shows that Mr Peter Doherty - the original and best indie kid of modern times - is back. And it’s bloody great!
Rating: 5/5 - Good to have you back Peter.
