Mastodon are one of those rock bands that might not get quite the recognition they deserve thanks to the likes of Metallica and Led Zeppelin swanning about and hogging the musical limelight.
So for those of you not in the know, these blokes hail from Atlanta, and have released four super fit albums so far; despite not appealing to the masses right away, yet still managing to bag a couple of devoted fans from the get go.
Anyway, they're ready to unleash on your poor unsuspecting ears their latest barrage of guitar-filled rock noise in the form of Divinations from their forthcoming album, Crack the Skye.
Despite not being a massive fan of Mastodon, I'm intrigued from the start of this track as Indian sitar sounds are not usually one you might associate with heavy metal these days. well maybe India Metal, but i must have missed that section during my last visit to HMV.
Although, there is the usual super sexy guitar hooks you will only find on a Mastodon track thanks to the heroics of Brent Hinds as well as your regular cymbal-thrashing goodness courtesy of Brann Dailor.
The of course, these's a nice turn up for the books as Brent sings (okay, sort of growls) his little heart out rather than screaming so hard i actually want to buy him a packed of Halls Soothers.
So it isn't the new Enter Sandman or even Sweet Child O Mine but it's a pretty good effort, and perhaps one of Mastodon's strongest tracks to date; and for existing fans, it's sure to set their stereos alight with joy; and when the album is released... well we could be in for a very loud few weeks!
