I think the fact that I’ve never seen Gavin And Stacey makes the ‘point’ behind this single a little lost on me, but I have been kindly informed by my work mate that this rendition of the Bee Gee’s classic does actually feature in the hit BBC1 comedy.
It’s a sad fact that when TV personalities try their hand at making a charity single it usually goes tits up; and they should really stick to what they’re good at, and Rob Brydon doesn’t exactly have the voice of an angel.
On the other hand, Ruth Jones, who calls herself Vanessa Jenkins on the single, does have a pretty good voice and gives the single at least a little bit of credibility, until she starts rambling on in her ‘chivvy’ voice before Mr Tom Jones blasts out the finale.
How the hell they’ve managed to blag Tom Jones to take part on this I have no idea, but what’s more, Robin Gibb even provides backing vocals! Nessa told us that; “I’m not gonna lie to you, it’s made my week working with Tom again. We go back a long way. Simple as. And as for Robin, he’s been beggin me for years to be my backing singer. I’m only glad this single could make his dream come true. Tidy.”
As if one cover version wasn’t enough, ‘Bryn West’ also covers James Blunt’s Wiseman in his broad Welsh accent, and okay, it might not be quite up to James’ standards, and he might not have actually endorsed the cover, but it is hilarious.
Overall, this single has everything a Comic Relief single should have; great songs that people can sing along to, and an attitude for fun and frivolity in the face of rubbish times in the world. Love it!
Rating:2/5 - But if we were judging on the ‘fun factor, it would definitely be a 5.
