Ever since I first saw Alex Kapranos sing this song on one of those last night chat shows - I can’t remember which one it was now… - I have been head over heels in love with it.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve always liked the songs Franz Ferdinand have brought out, but never to the point where I’d actually consider buying an album, but after hearing No You Girls for the first time, I was an instant convert, and Tonight: Franz Ferdinand has found its way into my life!
I love the way the song encapsulates everything that great music should be, honest, edgy and with that special something that you just can’t put your finger on, but you know, without a doubt, that this track is nothing short of fantastic.
The three versions of the song on the single release are pretty swish too, there’s the version you hear Jo Wiley bleating on about on radio one whilst she’s trying to act all ‘hip,’ then there’s the album ‘version and then a crazy ‘Vince Clark Remix’ which isn’t great. Well I mean for fans of Vince I expect it’s bloody great, and it could even be a grower.. But I’m still crazy about the original, I don’t think there’s enough room for an electro version of the song just yet.
Okay, so I am taking Franz Ferdinand shaped baby steps into their fan base, but if they keep bringing out super sexy songs like this one, I’m going to be checking them out the next time they roll into town!
What’s more, I’d always thought frontman Alex was a bit frog-like, but after seeing him whack out this little tune I think I’ve fallen head over heels for him as well… I can’t put my finger on what it is either, he just oozes this charisma from every pore.. “Hit me with your eyes so sweetly, yes I love… I mean I’d love to get to know you…” Not half.
