Out 4 April
Following their debut double A side single Leni / Science of Sleep, Flash Fiktion return with their delayed second instalment, eight months later, which acts as a mini EP to showcase the varied range of ideas and influences from the three piece electro outfit.
The four track record opens with the main single, Capsules of Sun, a synth driven flamboyant pop song with Cuban rhythms from percussionist Dan.
The single is a far cry from what we witnessed with the debut singles (which in themselves were entirely different from one another), Capsules of Sun steps out of the darkness of Lemi and into the sunshine.
Elegant harmonies reminiscent of Fleet Foxes, from singer Matt and guitarist Ollie, collide effortlessly with a sound more comparable to something in between Late of the Pier and Friendly Fires.
As a single, Capsules of Sun is a stand out track that wont fail to get you moving but before the critics can crowbar the three twenty-something's, with all their guitars, synths and percussion into a pigeon hole, Flash Fiktion deliver something entirely unexpected again with track two.
Mo Ping Pong is much less of a dance track, a lyrical and guitar driven piece that almost steps into the realms of indie-pop.
Track three is a remix by Is Tropical of Capsules of Sun, a dancier version that sees the song stripped of its Cuban influences and injected with a healthy dose of club beats and vocal distortion.
The hidden gem on the record however, is track four, an Old Arc remix of Flash Fixtion's debut, Leni, and in many ways a totally different track from its original.
A more ambient sound with a slower pace and unmistakable jungle influences. The added bass means the sound goes far deeper and the track is overall far more listenable.
The band claim to love Bowie and cite MGMT, Yeysayer and the XX amongst their influences, although Flash Fiktion are barely comparable to any of these.
With eight months between the first and second singles and no sign of an album anytime soon, it's advisable to savour what Flash Fiktion do choose to serve up.
The 7" vinyl picture disc features exclusive artwork by Nicky Carvell and is a refreshing contrast to the hoards of mass music machines modern artists so often become.
Flash Fiktion play The Macbeth on 28 March.
Verdict: 3/5
