Annie Lennox

Annie Lennox

I’ve got to admit, I have been a fan of Annie Lennox since my mum introduced me to her Medusa album when I was a child. But at the same time, Ash’s 2001 album, Free All Angels, from which the song is taken, was one of my favourite albums for years.

So when I heard Annie was going to be covering this, I was altogether a little dubious, because Tim Wheeler is in my list of ‘men to marry’ and anyone attempting something of his strikes fear into my heart.

The cover though, is not half bad; Annie has more or less stuck with the original melody, but puts her own stamp on the lyrics in a way that only a woman like Annie Lennox can. After all, she is one of the most amazing female vocalists of all time.

Although this version contains a far less ‘rockier’ edge, the “woo ooh ooh” background vocals and the tambourine noise breathe new life into this old classic; Annie Lennox’s voice can do no wrong in my eyes.

The single itself is taken from The Annie Lennox Collection, her first ever solo retrospective which will be released on March 9. With a career that has spanned 26 magnificent years, Annie Lennox has amassed sales of more than 78 million albums worldwide.

Her towering achievements also include 34 hit singles, 4 Grammy Awards, 11 Brit Awards and 5 Ivor Novello Awards and the superstar has also won an Academy Award and two Golden Globes.

Most recently, last November Lennox was presented with the prestigious Special Award Of Merit at the American Music Awards. Previous recipients of this award have included Prince, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and Johnny Cash.

Although I’ll be sticking to the Ash version, I bet my bottom dollar that my mum will be blasting this from her car for months to come! What’s more, I have very little doubt that when this single hits stores on March 2, it will fly off sales racks like hotcakes. Tim Wheeler would be proud!
