Matt Duke

Matt Duke

The latest bright young thing to emerge from the States, Matt Duke is a self-taught musician determined to make it big in the acoustic pop scene.

The 21-year-old, who hails from Philadelphia, recently released his debut album proper, Kingdom Underground, which mixes elements of folk, jazz and rock to stand apart from the endless slew of similar songsmiths.

Rabbit is the album's gentlest ballad and sees the often quite rich timbres stripped right back to the bare nature of an acoustic arrangement.

The melodies are simply spine-tingling and Duke's breathy voice is never strained; a mere whisper that glides over the delicately spaced notes one small step at a time.

The song is not the most immediately catchy, but the graceful orchestration and all-round sugar sweet sound make it incredibly listenable.

While most indie and alternative fans will find the single's heavily polished surface a little hard to swallow, admirers of Jason Mraz and John Mayer will be licking their lips and asking for more.
