Now, I know you’re all probably a little bit fed up of hearing me rant on about those sexies in Fightstar, and I promise, I’ll give it a rest after this… at least for a week or two.
So, last night the boys rolled up at Manchester Academy with their new celeb best mates, In Case Of Fire, and by the time I got there at 8pm, the place was already packed out and smelling like horny teenage hormones.
In Case Of Fire were their usual unanimated selves, but still managed to make a go all wobbly inside despite not actually doing much on stage at all, other than just standing there. I suppose that’s the problem when your singer has to play a guitar and mess about with pedals though… it kind of limit’s the movability.
Obviously that didn’t bother the hoards of women that were drooling over Colin Robinson for the band’s epic half a hour set. I don’t really know what it is I love about these guys, there is something I can’t quite put my finger on.
Anyway, soon enough it was time for that little sex kitten, Alex Westaway and his mates in Fightstar to take to the stage and give the fans what they’d came for… and no one got their money’s worth more than this mental woman in front of me who was flailing her arms around like she’d taken far too much LSD - to be honest, I was slightly worried that I was going to leave the venue with a black eye at she edged closer into my ‘personal space’ well, it could have been because I proceeded to stick my stiletto heel in her direction.
Nevertheless though, the set was amazing, with Charlie Simpson’s voice booming out around the Academy like the voice of God in Bruce Almighty - you know what I mean… they guys ploughed their way through hit after hit, with a great mixture of track from their back catalogue, which reaped a super sense of gratification from the crowd as they blasted through The English Way, Mercury Summer, and Floods… which saw Laruso guitarist (and Be Human producer) take to the stage for a stint with the lads.
So, after seeing them at the Apollo last year, I thought the Academy would be a bit of a let down for such an epic band, but in fact, they made the cosy little venue their own for one night only… well most of the night actually because there were still fans hanging around when I left at 1am… hoping for a glimpse of their heroes.
In all, Charlie Simpson, Alex Westaway, Dan Haigh and Omar Abidi looks set to be a force to be reckoned with in 2009.
