Ever since Just Jack released that ‘Why do you want to go and put stars in their eyes?’ song back in 2007 I’ve thought he was a little bit good. Okay, so no-one really knows who he is, but yet every song he releases seems to get endless airplay.
Then there’s this year’s summer anthem, Embers which isn’t getting as much play listing at the moment, but is still pretty much up there with the song’s you’re not going to be able to escape from at your local nightclub this summer.
As he prepares to unleash his latest offering, Doctor Doctor on June 22, he thought it was about time to release an album, although, with only five songs on it, it’s a little bit more of a glorified EP than actual album, but still, it shows Jack pushing the boundaries of modern pop music.
Doctor Doctor is another up-tempo funky track with a summer beat that could even see him knocking himself off the summer charts as this one takes it’s place. Opening with the line; “Now most of these pricks are hypnotised, sharing at her tits and her shiny thighs.” I’m not quite sure if my mum will be loving it quite so much as me.
Although the rest of the album isn’t quite as far into funky town as we might expect with The Day I Died being quite dull and more like a Mike Skinner offering, well I guess the title kinda gives that away doesn’t it; there would be no point in making a song about death all happy now would there?
Astronaut sounds pretty much like something those blokes of The Mighty Boosh wrote with the help of Lily Allen during a quiet Sunday afternoon, whilst Goth At The Disco is more like something he penned whilst off his face on LSD and hallucinating at his local nightspot.
In all, Just Jack fans will be happy with this offering, unless of course they want a ‘proper’ album rather than a five-track wonder. Nevertheless, Just Jack can prove just why he is one of the biggest musicians around this summer in just five songs… and that’s no mean feat.
