"He's a silverback with a desire for power"
Chaotic live performances may have been a feature of Boy Mandeville's rise to prominence on the London scene last year, but their hotly anticipated new single Gorilla is more lazy sunshine than chaos.
The North London quartet effortlessly blend indie-pop with calypso percussion and jam-style "jit-jive" guitar riffing to create a truly infectious sound. The track is bursting with feel good flavours which continues to cement the view that they have all the ingredients to really make their mark on the British indie scene.
The quirky nature of the single becomes all the more apparent when lyricist Jack Parris explains Gorilla is not about your average ape: "He's a silverback with a desire for power", begging the listener to raise such questions as "Am I wiser than a gorilla?" while examining the dilemma between man's natural-self and his modern environment.
Complicated? Well this just all part of Boy Mandeville's intriguing approach.
Having previously supported the likes of Bedouin Soundclash and Herve, they are set to feature at Secret Garden Party and other boutique festivals this summer. When listening to the musical fabrics and rhythms interwoven into this single it's clear their stock will continue to grow.
