Deathlike Silence

Deathlike Silence

To be honest with you, I think I have a real soft spot in my heart for Finnish metal, I mean, why is it that Scandinavia produces such incredible music time after time whilst we get stuck with shed loads of rubbish imitations of the greats?

Up until about 24 hours ago I’d never heard of Deathlike Silence until my friend played their new album, Saturday Night Evil in his car insisting that “If you like Nightwish, you’ll like these.” Convinced that no one could ever live up to Nightwish I was pretty dubious, but bloody hell, these a pretty damn swish.

Now I know it isn’t fair to compare a band to my favourite band in the world ever, because at the end of the day, they are a separate band with the only similarity being the female vocalist, Ms Maya and the dollop of power metal that can help anyone through a rubbish day at work.

I love that every single one of the 11 tracks on the album manages to seamlessly bend guitar-driven rock with oodles of gothic romance that head your heading for the nearest corset and stockings whilst ‘poofing’ your hair with extra strong hairspray. Okay, so maybe I’m being a little stereotypical there, it’s east for me to pretend whilst sat here in my pink Hawaii tee with leggings and killer heels, but I can dream….

Their take on Mike Oldfield’s Moonlight Shadow is perfectly on point and only goes to show how incredible this sextet are, oh my mum would be so proud, she loves a bit of Mike! Plus she loves female singers, and Ms Maya is pretty mind-blowing, so Deathlike Silence could actually be the band to get my mum into some decent music at last… although I’m not sure she’ll really go for the band name… you know what these OAP’s are like….!

Overall though this is a epic album that is perfectly suited for any fan of power metal, Finnish metal, female-fronted metal, hell, it’s the album for anyone with a decent taste in music…
