I have come to find A Skylit Drive in a rather roundabout way… on Saturday night my boyfriend decided to play Escape The Fate on our way to a Periphery gig, which then inspired me to listen to them and stumble upon Blessthefall… from there I tumbled into this pit of A Skylit Drive and decided to give their forthcoming album a spin.
Having never listened to any of their earlier stuff, I wouldn't like to comment on 'progression' or anything like that when it comes to this review, but what I can say, is that from the very first track of the record, I knew I was going to be a big fan of the band.
So far today I've had three cups of coffee, written about Jude Law and Sienna Miller splitting up and listened to the album three times, and each time it plays, I seem to find myself falling in love with Michael Jagmin and friends.
Mixing just the right amount of happy sing-a-long vocals with growly roars and the odd gang chant is just what I like. The album itself doesn’t feature a wide variety of different songs… like I said, they each employ your standard bouncy melody, with a good mix of clean and screamed vocals, and whilst one track isn't outlandishly different from the rest, it isn't at all a negative, as each track is strong. To quote Sum 41 - it's all Killer No Filler.
The opening 1.30 minutes of 'Carry The Broken' do give them impression of a more synth-led kind of sound (which I was dreading), but thankfully after the opening bars of Too Little Too Late', all is well again.
It's clear this is going to be a great album to hear live - with my personally excited for 'Conscience Is A Killer' and my current favourites 'The Cali Buds' and 'Fuck The System', but don't fear, you can prance around your bedroom with a hairbrush/microphone too thanks to tracks such as 'Your Mistake'. Not that I ever do that. Obviously.
So, I'm sorry I have nothing to compare to in this review, as it's probably the first time I'd dipped my platform-heeled toe into the Fearless Records roster, but from what I've heard so far, I like, and I'm hoping we can travel on this musical magic carpet ride together.
Oh and of course, if you can recommend anyone else for me to listen to, feel free!
