Josephine releases her new single, Portrait, on the 25th February 2013 through Ark Recordings. It is taken from her recently released debut album of the same title.
2012 has been a breakthrough year for Manchester's Josephine Oniyama. Her arresting debut album was released in October to widespread acclaim, largely heralding her as a terrific new British voice. An appearance on Later, with Jools Holland, great support across the country's airwaves, and a hefty schedule of touring has made it a fruitful year, and 2013 is looking increasingly busier still for this fine young artist.
Josephine, a local to Manchester's Cheetham Hill, created a self-reflective debut album which illustrated the many different sides of a fascinating character. Vocally, her prowess recalls 'the Queen of gospel', Mahalia Jackson's distinctive contralto, yet behind the powerful delivery is a husky undercurrent making every replaying seem like a personal performance.
This compelling delivery commands attention completely, on a record replete with a vibrant array of musical genres. Whether accompanied by Ed Harcourt on stripped-back piano melody House Of Mirrors, or playing a fast-paced bossa-nova infused jaunt via Pepper Shaker, she's equally awe-inspiring.
This single, Portrait, is arguably one of the most striking songs on that debut record, showcasing her assured vocal delivery, and ear for beautifully rendered folk and soul song craft.
Josephine concludes the year on the road with Rodrigo y Gabriela, ahead of a full UK tour alongside Paloma Faith in January and February 2013. Josephine headlines the Bush Hall in London in February.
