Taken from their 'Balance' album, released in 2011, Sound of Rum; the hip-hop inspired 3 piece, continue to deliver their punchy poetic music, headed by Kate Tempest.
SOR kick off the year with the digital-only release of their third single (following Slow, Slow and Best Intentions), 'So Low'; a
reflective anthem set to battle the January blues.
Having had a breakthrough 2011 debuting their 'Balance' album in May, the band went on to perform at a number of high profile festivals and events including Bestival, Latitude, Camden Crawl, Glastonbury, Blissfields Great Escape, Electric Picnic, Les Inrocks (Paris) and also
completed a tour of Germany, playing shows at Hamburg's Reeperbahn Festival, and in Berlin.
Appearances alongside Scroobius Pip (a longterm fan) and Mercury-nominated rapper Ghostpoet have added to their kudos points this year, as well as performing across a dozen shows as special guest to Billy Bragg (on his Leftfield in Motion tour with The King Blues and Akala).
Sound of Rum - Kate Tempest, Archie Marsh and Ferry Lawrenson - have been performing together since summer 2008, both on stage and out in the fields to a growing fan base.
Rob da Bank, the BBC Radio 1 DJ and head honcho of successful UK festival Bestival, picked up on Sound of Rum in 2009 and quickly signed their debut LP ‘Balance’ to his label Sunday Best Recordings,
enrolling his long-term friend Dan Carey [Dizzee Rascal / La Roux / Lily Allen / Franz Ferdinand / Hot Chip / Kylie / CSS] to produce the album.
Kate Tempest is a celebrated and renown poet and artist and has won poetry slams in New York, Salzberg, Austria and London. She has been commissioned to write poems for Barnado’s children’s charity and designer Louis Vuitton amongst others.
Kate has been invited to give Poetry workshops to students at YALE University in Spring 2012 and will also be working with Amnesty International on a lesson pack to be rolled out to schools across the UK mid 2012.
In January 2012, Kate is taking part in a Channel 4 3-minute segment of an acapella poem performance with an animation narrative, and is also part of an uplifting poems campaign called 'Words in Motion' on the London Underground. their
