Prince is facing a $2.3 million (£1.5 million) lawsuit over a cancelled concert in Dublin, Ireland.

The Purple Rain hitmaker was slated to perform at the Croke Park concert in June 2008, but he reportedly pulled out of the show just 10 days before.

Bosses at promotions company MCD are seeking compensation for financial loss and damage to commercial reputation from Prince, full name Prince Rogers Nelson, as well as his agents at the California-based William Morris Endeavour Entertainment.

The singer has blamed his agents for booking the event without permission, but they argue the star cancelled the gig and gave "no reason of substance" for deciding to pull out.

The case went before a judge at Dublin's Commercial Court on Tuesday (23Feb10), when MCD's Denis Desmond explained promoters would have never put tickets up for sale if they thought Prince would cancel the show.

He also claimed he had no reason to doubt William Morris agents, because the firm is one of the two biggest agencies in the world. MCD allegedly paid half of Prince's requested $3 million (£1.9 million) fee to William Morris, as well as $949,760 (£593,600) to use the Croke Park location.

William Morris executives claim the decision to scrap the show was outside of their control and they returned the $1.5 million (£970,874) booking fee to MCD. They have denied negligence, breach of duty or misrepresentation. Justice Peter Kelly, who is overseeing the case, has been asked to decide whether Prince's agents or the artist himself is liable to compensate MCD.

The case continues.
