The Strokes' Albert Hammond Jr. "indulged" in drugs too much.
The guitarist with the 'Machu Picchu' rockers admits his rock 'n' roll lifestyle was were getting out of hand in 2011 as the band promoted their 'Angles' record, and he needed to reign things in.
He said: "Instead of indulging over my whole life I indulged over a period of a few years. You do it at first to get yourself out of your head, so you think of things differently.
"Then it gets to a point where you're just out of your head and not thinking of anything, and once you get to that situation it takes away from the music, so what's the point?
"Music was the first drug that got me excited, and I think drugs take you in a new direction, then you forget that you have to stop."
The Strokes released their fifth album 'Comedown Machine' earlier this year with no promotion, interviews, pictures or support, but despite this Albert insists the band - who nearly split due to personal differences in the past - are still very much together.
He added an interview with NME magazine: "The Strokes are always open to... it's always going to have something.
"I'm not saying that's the word from the band, just how I look at it, how it feels. Like we've gone past the point of not doing stuff."
In the meantime Albert is releasing a new EP of his solo material in September.
