Neil Young has cancelled the rest of his European tour.

The 'Heart of Gold' musician has pulled out of dates in the UK, Norway, Denmark and Germany after Frank 'Poncho' Sampedro, guitarist for his backing band Crazy Horse, broke his hand.

Neil said in a statement on his website: "Due to an accident involving Crazy Horse, the remaining dates on the Neil Young and Crazy Horse tour of Europe and the British Isles have been cancelled.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes to our fans or the festivals where we were scheduled to appear. As you must be, we too are disappointed at this unfortunate turn of events."

Despite axing the dates, Poncho is expected to be fit for the 67-year-old musician's North American tour, which kicks off in Ontario, Canada on August 31.

A source close to Neil told the Liverpool Echo newspaper: "It's a mild fracture. He's expected to make a complete recovery in time for the North American tour."

Neil's band are not the only ailing rockers as Queen's Brian May had a knee replacement operation earlier today and it is unknown how long it will take for him to recover.

He tweeted: "With a shiny new knee. This no walk in the park (!) but for 1st time in months I feel optimistic and free of that OLD pain. (sic)"
