Shaggy appeared on ITV's This Morning today (July 22) to speak about just why he's been away from the music industry for around a decade.
Huge hits came for Shaggy in 2000 and 2001 with 'It Wasn't Me' and 'Angel' respectively, but the artist has now called for others in the business to "be careful what you wish for" after some bad experiences left him unable to continue in the spotlight.
Asked by Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford where he'd been for "10 years or so", Shaggy explained: "I went ahead and I had some management issues and some label issues. Like people go through different things in their career.
"Things weren't working out on the management side and things weren't working out on the label side either after those big, massive hits.
"It's funny, you gotta be careful what you wish for. You might be like, 'I want really big hits.' But when you get really big hits and your label is making $150 million they are people who are now interested in what you do. They are going to begin to tell you what to do and so you become important.
"So your creative freedom, you're not going to have that again. And there's a lot of egos and stuff flying."
Before his music career, Shaggy spent four years in the marines and the musician told the presenters just how well-prepared the experience left him for the industry.
"I think it prepared me for what this is. I go to bed late and I wake up early, in this game to win it you have to do that. The military prepared me to do that, you go to bed late and wake up early."
Shaggy went on to admit that he's fine with the changes in the industry since his absence and revealed his choice to return came about because he now has "the right team".
"They offered me what I wanted. There are certain things that never change - the song, the song, the song. It boils down to having a great record."
Earlier on in the show, Shaggy had performed his brand new single 'I Need Your Love'.
