Mike Rutherford only set up Mike + The Mechanics because being a solo artist didn't appeal to him.
The musician, who is in rock band Genesis with Phil Collins and Tony Banks, decided never to make another solo album after his second studio release, while the group were on hiatus.
Mike said: "I realised after my second solo album, which I sang - that's partly why I didn't do it again - I'm happy working in collaboration with people.
"For me, The Mechanics was always about doing the same as Genesis, co-writing, but with different people, and so it sounded and felt different from the word go."
Mike + The Mechanics, which also features Tim Howard, Andrew Roachford, Anthony Drennan, Luke Juby and Gary Wallis, are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year.
They will be marking the milestone with a compilation album and a deluxe version of their 'Living Years' album, released in 1988.
Mike will also be releasing his memoir which reveals details about his family, friends and his time in one of the biggest bands in the world.
The guitarist says he is still amazed how much material Genesis have managed to produce, having been together with different line-ups since 1967.
He said: "It's interesting what came out of that one band. A lot of people don't know to this day that Phil Collins was in Genesis. Peter Gabriel was ... I still hear today, 'You're from Genesis?' From this one nucleus of songwriters so much happened."
