As the frontman of The View, Kyle Falconer has enjoyed five hit albums, a Mercury Prize nomination and strings of sell-out shows, and now the talented musician is heading out on his own, releasing his first solo material to the world. Celebrating Father’s Day today (June 17), the artist has dropped his brilliant new track Family Tree, which you can now listen to below:
Family Tree is the perfect introduction to Falconer’s reflective and emotional solo writing. It kicks off with threads of darkness before exploding into an all-encompassing and beautiful piece that also reflects the singer’s own progress.
As just one of the songs on upcoming debut solo album No Thank You, the LP promises to be a brutally honest and raw collection of tunes, that explore a period of Falconer’s life which saw him enter rehab in the summer of 2016, right up to today where he’s embracing a new life as a father.
Falconer would enter rehab in Thailand, before returning to his home country of Scotland with plans to create his solo material. Having already written a couple of new songs, including The Therapist, he discovered that some of those he had penned in the past were incredibly relatable and relevant to his situation.
“Every day you get triggers and traumas stuck in your head, and you’re hearing all of these horrible stories,” the singer reflects. “You want to hear it, but at the same time you’re thinking, ‘I’m here to help myself but I’ve got to hear everyone else’s story.’ It’s quite hard to hear, and I was thinking that a lot of these people were worse off than me.”
He also explained about how the album’s title came about, chatting about a time when he and his family visited their friend Liam Gallagher in Phuket: “Liam said, ‘If you don’t use it [the album title], I’m going to use it for my next album.’ It makes a lot of sense. No thanks to a band, no thanks to anyone, I recorded it all myself so no need to thank anyone – just thank me.”
Kyle Falconer’s debut solo album No Thank You drops on July 27, 2018 via Riverman Records.
