Justin Bieber has admitted he "didn't like" a lot of his old music.
The 21-year-old singer is gearing up to release his first studio album in three years, 'Purpose', and insists it's totally different from anything he's done before because he wouldn't have listened to a lot of the songs he has previously released if they were by someone else.
He confessed: "In the past I've recorded songs that I didn't like, that I wouldn't listen to, that the label was telling me to record."
Instead, the 'What Do You Mean?' hitmaker has made the type of music he personally enjoys on his new collection - released on November 13 - and revealed he was more focused on the album being "inspiring" than featuring lots of hits.
He said: "It's hard to make meaningful songs that make you want to dance because it can come off cheesy.
"I'm self-expressing with this album - I can't skip on the moments that were dark, the moments that were happy, the ex-girlfriend stuff. It makes it real, rather than 'Let's call up Max Martin to write you a hit song.' I want my music to be inspiring."
And having admitted his former girlfriend Selena Gomez influenced the LP, he said he still has feelings for her because they shared such an important part of their lives.
He told Billboard magazine: "I'm proud of the woman she is today.
"When you love someone that much, even if something comes between you, it's a love that never really dies."
