David Bowie rejected a collaboration with Coldplay.
The 'A Sky Full of Stars' hitmakers have revealed they always wanted to work with the 'Starman' singer before his death earlier this year but drummer Will Champion admits that when lead singer Chris Martin once got in touch with a possible idea, it was swiftly shut down.
He said: "[Bowie replied to say,] 'It's not a very good song, is it?' He was very discerning - he wouldn't just put his name to anything. I'll give him credit for that! ...
"When you have any involvement in music he was one of the points of reference for absolutely everything, for genres and for how to be a rockstar or a popstar or whatever it was. Completely defining that. So for musicians it's quite disorienting."
The group also paid tribute to the late star, who tragically passed away after a battle with cancer.
Guitarist Jonny Buckland told NME magazine: "I felt incredibly sad when I heard David Bowie had died. We've all loved his music for as long as we've known about music."
Meanwhile, Coldplay are also reportedly keen to collaborate with Rihanna and Beyoncé when they perform at the Super Bowl 50 half-time show.
A source said: "Chris and his band know they're not typically as showy as recent performers like Katy Perry and Madonna with all the dancers and, while they love a light show, they still want to bring a few surprises out. Beyoncé and Rihanna are both keen to join in the high-profile ceremony and will add just the spark needed to make it an amazing and unforgettable show."
