Courtney Love claims Kurt Cobain was "desperate" to be huge as a rockstar.
The singer, who was married to the Nirvana frontman, who committed suicide in 1994, insists Kurt wanted to be well-known, despite claims he found it a burden being so famous and successful.
Speaking in a National Geographic miniseries 'The 90s: The Last Great Decade', she said: "He wrote to every major [and] minor label, 'We'll pay. Let us be on your label'.
"He was desperate to be the biggest rock star in the world. But he made it look like it was thrust upon him."
The band - also made up of Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic - eventually signed to independent record label Sub Pop in 1989 and later to major label DGC Records.
They sold more than 25 million records in the US alone and over 75 million worldwide.
Meanwhile, Courtney, who had 21-year-old daughter Frances with Kurt, recently said it was "time to make amends" with Kurt's former band mate, Dave, after decades of turmoil and bad blood.
The pair put aside their problems at Nirvana's induction into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in April and even hugged on stage to prove they were working on their friendship.
