Ariana Grande to play Penny in Hairspray TV special

Ariana Grande is the latest name to be linked to the cast of an American special television event, stepping into the role of Hairspray's Penny.

Taking to her Twitter account to announce the news, Grande wrote:

most of you know that i'm really just a musical theater geek.... like a really big one... so.... my heart is very full re: this announcement

The live show airing in America on NBC on December 7 also features Kirstin Chenoweth, Harvey Fierstein, Jennifer Hudson, Derek Hough, Martin Short and newcomer Maddie Baillio. Baillio will be playing the show's lead role, Tracy.
