Stevie Wonder is to receive a prestigious honour from the U.S. government for his lifetime of contributions to popular music.The 25-time Grammy winner has been chosen as the second recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song - following last year's honoree, singer/songwriter Paul Simon.Librarian of Congress, James H. Billington, says: "The Gershwin Prize was created to honour an artist whose creative output transcends distinctions between musical styles and idioms, bringing diverse listeners together and fostering mutual understanding and appreciation. Stevie Wonder's music epitomises this ideal."In addition to the prize, Wonder has accepted the Library's offer of a musical commission. In a statement, Wonder, 58, says of the honour: "It's an immense privilege to join such a remarkable roster of musicians and composers. I am touched to receive this honour and look forward to creating music for the celebration."Wonder's award presentation is scheduled to take place on 23 February.
