Stevie Wonder and Revd. Jesse Jackson were among the stars and politicians who paid their final respects to civil rights activist and attorney Percy Sutton in New York on Wednesday.
Wonder sang Always at the Harlem funeral service, while slain civil rights hero Malcolm X's daughter Attalah Shabazz was among those who fought back tears as she remembered the man who served her father.
She told mourners Sutton had honoured her father by upholding his promise to "watch his family".
As a fitting final tribute, the hearse carrying Sutton drove past the fabled Apollo Theater in Harlem - the building he was credited with saving. The attorney died on 26 December.
