Shaun Ryder replied on newspaper articles to piece together his career when writing his life story because years of drug abuse has wrecked his memory.
The singer launched his career as frontman of Happy Mondays in the 80s but the band fell apart in the 90s due to his addictions to heroine and crack cocaine.
He went on to form Black Grape before reforming his first band and eventually kicking his drug habit. But his years of wild partying have left his powers of recall ruined.
When Ryder sat down to write his memoirs, he turned to a stack of press interviews he had given throughout his career to prompt his memory.
He tells TV show This Morning: "I had a lot of help from reading interviews and newspaper articles that I'd kept and had stashed in my house. (Remembering) the 1990s got a bit difficult, but before that and after that it's ok."
