Geordie boy Joe McElderry, 18, was crowned X-Factor's 2009 winner last night after a weekend of battling it out against Stacey Solomon, 20, and Olly Murs, 25.

The performance-studies student from South Shields, will be in the running for this year’s Christmas number one, with his cover version of Miley Cyrus’ song,  ‘The Climb’, which goes on sale in stores today. His victory was the second in a row for Cheryl Cole as the fellow Geordie also coached last year’s winner, Alexandra Burke.

The final show last night played host to over 20 million people while 10 million people voted between Joe, and runner up Olly Murs from Colchester.

Over the past 3 months we have seen the number of X-Factor hopefuls get whittled down from a mighty 200,000 to just Joe and as he sang his debut single after he was announced the winner, his CD went to press to be released in stores this morning.

Last night’s show featured music legend Paul McCartney, who sang with all 12 finalists just before the results were revealed by presenter Dermot O’Leary.
