PIAS (the main distributor for independent record labels in the UK) has issued the following statement:
"There was a fire last night at the SonyDADC warehouse which services the physical distribution for PIAS in the UK and Ireland.
PIAS is working closely with SonyDADC who are implementing their emergency plans. PIAS's UK offices in London and all other areas of our business are unaffected."
All of PIAS' stock is believed to have been damaged in the blaze.
Artists at many levels are on independent labels, and this could be a major setback for the industry.
Charlie Simpson has announced on Twitter that the release of his debut solo album will be delayed.
Posting on the social networking site, he said: "My thoughts are with all those who work at Pias at this difficult time. They are an invaluable part of independent music in this country. Very sad day."
Singer-songwriter Frank Turner spoke to us before heading to perform in Croatia.
He said: "It's gutting. I'm really not optimistic about prospects for the indies right now. A lot of them will go under."
He added that the situation was "very depressing."
Female First will have a full feature on the situation once comments have come in from others affected by what has happened.
