Sir Elton John was honoured for his contribution to musical theatre this weekend at the Annual Drama League Awards in New York.
The Rocket Man received a special tribute at Friday's ceremony for his work on hit stage shows including Aida, The Lion King and Billy Elliot, which has been a major success since it opened on Broadway last year.
The honours were handed out at the Annual Awards Luncheon hosted by Jeremy Irons and Cynthia Nixon, and when presented with his Distinguished Achievement award, John took the opportunity to mock his notorious temper.
He told the crowd, "I heard about this from my office. They said, ‘They want to give you an award from the Drama League.' I thought, I've been a member of the drama league for years. They went, ‘No, no, no. Not the Madonna drama league. The OTHER drama league!'"
John previously infuriated the pop superstar at a 2004 awards ceremony, by accusing her of lip-syncing at her gigs.
Other stars honoured at the ceremony included Angela Lansbury, currently appearing in the Broadway revival of Blithe Spirit, who was recognized for her unique contribution to theatre, and writer/director Arthur Laurents, the man behind the recent revivals of West Side Story and Gypsy, who received receive the Julia Hansen Award for directing.
