Laura Kidd is the woman behind She Makes War, a talented musician set to release her new EP 'Disarm:15' on December 4 via My Big Sister Recordings.
Reworking some of her favourite tracks from debut album 'Disarm' five years after its release, we got the chance to put some questions to Laura about the music, her future and much more in a new and exclusive interview.
For those who may be new to your music, how best would you describe your sound?
Melancholy, personal pop with grungey guitars and a hefty dose of glitter.
What challenges have you faced in the music industry so far?
Embarking on any kind of creative project has lots of challenges but the main thing is keeping going. If you're putting good things into the world and believe in what you're doing, then you'll start to find others will too.
How difficult would you say this career path is in terms of making a name for yourself?
I'm not making music to make a name for myself, per se - I'd like lots of people to hear it but I'm focused on building a sustainable, meaningful music career rather than getting my name in lights for no good reason.
How important is it for you to have creative control over the work you produce?
Extremely. The music I make is my personality, experience and vision in audio form so it wouldn't make sense to let someone else control that.
Where do you draw influence and inspiration from for your work?
From experiences in my life, thoughts about my place in the world and ideals for the future.
If you could collaborate with anybody going forward, who would you choose and why?
Crispin Hunt is a brilliant songwriter, singer and producer - he used to front The Longpigs who are possibly my favourite band in the world and as I've been singing along to his songs since I was a teenager so I know our voices go together really well! I'd also love to write with Hanne Hukkelberg - she makes incredible music.
Tell us a random, funny fact about you that not many people know.
I appear in series two, episode one of Extras standing next to David Bowie and singing along to the Fat Man Song.
Do you have definitive aims or goals for your career?
There are no tick boxes, but I'd like to continue making albums and steadily growing my audiences around the UK and Europe, and would love to go and play in America soon.
What should we expect from you in the coming weeks and months?
I'm heading out on a short tour to celebrate the launch of my 'Disarm:15' EP, which features five songs from my debut album lovingly reworked, then I'll be releasing new music videos in the New Year leading up to my third solo album coming out in March. I'm so excited to be putting music out into the world again!
