Rubylux

Rubylux

Rubylux have done a lot in a short amount of time. Their debut album 'The World Goes Quiet' was released on September 23 and we got a chance to chat with lead vocalist and guitarist in the group, Rob Irving.

Where did the name Rubylux come from?

It came from a psychic that lives next door to Adam. They used to see each other day to day and she used to tell him all sorts of weird and wonderful things that came true, and one day she said to him "Oh you're in a band! You have to use the word 'Ruby', because it's gonna be a lucky omen", so not wanting to tempt fate, we added 'lux' on the end - which is light in Latin - and came up with the name Rubylux.

Your debut album's been out for a week now - how have you found the reception?

It's been really good. We've had really good reviews and we've just been added to the Radio 2 playlist as well - so it's all moving really nicely.

How long has the album been in the making?

Just over a year - some of the songs were written about a year and ahalf ago but we took our time on it just so we could get it right.

How did you all actually meet each other?

Through school and college - I went to school with Adam. We started playing in bands when we were about 12-years-old, and then we went to college and just on the Brighton music scene we met the other two guys - Mike and Clark.

Do you have a favourite track on the album?

Personal favourite is 'Black Sunday Sparks'. I think it's slightly more of a progressive song, in terms of lyrics and the music. We took a long time on that song and it's got a lot of depth that we added to it, so that's my favourite.

You were recently announced as musical ambassadors for Soccerex - can you tell us who aren't familiar with that exactly what that is?

Soccerex is the largest football conference in the world so they deal with all the heads of FIFA and for example - in Brazil they're doing a big conference where all the old, amazing footballers like Pelé are gonna come and be ambassadors as well.

They put on a huge conference talking about football, the latest technology and things. They invited us to go over to Rio to go and play Copacabana Beach. We're the ambassador's music for them so it's an amazing honour.

How did it feel to be chosen as their first ever musical ambassadors?

Amazing - we're really chuffed and it's also leading to other amazing things as well - we're playing some football stadiums in October-November. We're doing like Everton, Brighton and things like that. It's really given us a step-up.

Alongside those, do you have any upcoming projects or live dates?

We've got some support tours and a few key headline dates that are being arranged for the end of the year, but everything's gonna be up on our website soon which is rubylux.net. Then we're off to America next year.

What would you say would be the best moment of your career to date?

That's a tough one - we'll go this interview, for sure!

Do you have a message for your fans?

Thank you very much for supporting us and we hope to see you at the next show.
