Heads Hearts

Heads Hearts

It has already been a busy year for Heads Hearts and it is set to get even busier for the girls with their release of their new EP.

we caught up with Amber, Lynne and Abby to chat about the new record and what lies ahead for them.

- 2013 is now well under way so what have the band been up to recently?

Amber - We've been working on perfecting our new EP and sorting our launch party (23rd March @ Water Rats, Kings Cross). We’ve also had a new video made for one of the songs on the EP.

Oh and we’ve been busy booking ourselves up for the year. We’re busy little bees.

- There is a new EP that is set to drop later this year so what can fans expect from the new collection of tracks and their sound?

Amber - Well... It’s not too far from what we are known for. Expect some more beautiful melodies, some dirty bass and some thumping beats. We’re excited to unleash this beast.

- The band formed back in 2008 so how do you feel that you have developed as musicians and songwriters from when you started out to this new EP.

Lynne - The line-up has completely changed and we all have a lot of input into our tunes. We work really well together, thankfully, so it’s a really interesting process. Every day is a school day in this business.

- You pen all the tracks as well so what are your major inspirations when it comes to writing?

Amber - My writing is inspired by the music I write too. I will generally write to melodies that LKP or I have created instead of writing a song and then creating the music around it. It’s the feel of the music that inspires what I write about.

- Who are your musical inspirations? And which artists are you enjoying listening to at the moment?

Abby - I am gonna be honest here. I don’t actually have an inspiration. But I am listening to: The Libertines at the moment and Rhianna. Bit of a mixture.

Amber - With regards to lyrical writing it has to be Amy Winehouse, it’s all seems so effortless and like she’s just having a chat with someone, but that coupled with the awesome rifts and grooves that she cracked out, crazy talent.

With regards to music & melodies it has to be Prince. This needs no further comment. Listening to: Solange Knowles

Lynne - Inspirations: Black Sabbath, Four Tet, Eurythmics - short and sweet.

Listening to: Four Tet, The Knife, Avett Brothers, Gui Boratt, Metric, Phoenix and all at the same time.

- Who has served as producer for this EP and how did that collaboration come about?

Abby - A couple of the songs were originally produced by Ed Cox (founder member of Heads Hearts) but LKP has remixed them to fit our current sound better.

She also created the two brand spanking new tracks so she pretty much gets full producer credits for this. And the true beauty is that she’s never done anything like this before now, clever isn’t she?

- Is there a full album on the horizon? And if so do you think it will follow a similar sound to this new EP?

Lynne - Not yet, it’s work in progress. We will keep to our usual heavy electro sound though, we’re not going to be touching the country vibe just yet maybe in a few years.

- I was reading that you also juggle work with a music career so how difficult is that?

Abby - Yeah, we all work full time so gigging/rehearsals/production/interviews etc all have to be squeezed around it. It can be very tiring.

- So how did you all meet in the first place? And where did your love of music start?

Amber - I started the band with a friend of mine a few years ago and we got it into a good place, but after a couple of years we decided to go our separate ways. I wasn’t quite done with HH so decided to make it into a proper band.

I had known Lynne for a while as she was actually taking Heads Hearts official photos. I knew she played bass & she looks rockin’ so when the time was right I asked her if she fancied coming out to play. Needless to say, she said yes.

Next stop was finding a hot drummer. I had met Abs a few years ago through a mutual friend who had brought her along to see Heads Hearts few times.

I knew she was a drummer and had been thinking about contacting her, so the next time I bumped into her I asked her if she fancied coming out to play with me and Lynne. She also said yes.

We got busy working on how we could jell all of the sounds together and within 4 weeks we played our first gig together, within 3 months we were playing our first big festival slot and we smashed it out of the park.

- What have been the highlights for the band so far?

Abby - Crystal Palace Overground Festival 2012 was pretty bloody special, very humbling. Making the video for ‘In My Blood’ and more recently a great gig at Barfly in Camden. What a crowd!

- You played a lot of live shows last year so are there any plans to get back out on the road as the release of the EP draws close?

Lynne - Of course! The EP launch party will be at The Water Rats - Kings Cross on Sat 23rd March. You should stay tuned on upcoming gigs. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter or visit www.headshearts.com

- Finally what is on the horizon for you for the rest of 2013?

Amber - To work harder, play harder and put on some epic shows. Oh and LKP’s wedding, this is most certainly going to be a highlight.
