As part of the hugely successful 80's band Five Star, and Grammys Nominations as well as Brit Awards to her name, Denise Pearson is stepping into the spotlight in a new solo venture.

We got the chance to catch up with Denise about her feelings going into this new project, what to expect from her forthcoming record and more.

How does it feel to be going into your first solo venture as an artist?

Scary! From the age of 15 I was used to having my brother and sisters performing with me. So now at the age of 45 I am just getting used to stepping out on stage as a solo act and doing it all by myself. But it’s fun and exciting!

You've already proved your worth in the industry with the group Five Star, but do you feel you've now got more to prove as a solo artist?

For sure, but I hope the press and public can take me on board and judge me purely on this new volume of work and not on my past. I’m a lot more mature vocally now as an artist compared to when I was a teenager in Five Star and this album reflects that.

What sort of music should we expect from your debut album 'Imprint'?

It features a varied mix of different genres from pop to R&B, ballads to dance tunes – but the main thread of the album is about personal relationships – from family, to friends and lovers, and my personal journey through life, hence the album title.

Can you tell us a little about the creative process behind this record?

A few of the songs were recorded whilst on a couple of writing retreats that I went on. There would be about 30 writers and musicians on a course and we were divided into teams of three where we had to produce a new track each day. At the end of the week they would choose their favourite song and I’m pleased to say the ballad, ‘Here I Am’ was one of those.

But I really started producing this album in earnest at the end of 2012. I had a creative spurt over about 6 months when I wrote

several new tracks including ‘We’re Not Over’ which was about the loss of my Dad. In the song he is singing to my mum.

How important is it for you to have creative control in what you do?

I like to work with great musicians and I’m blessed to have worked with some wonderful talent on this album. But I always look to get the opinions and advice of others and from that process mixed with my own experience in the business I trust that we have produced a timeless collection of songs that I am very proud of.

Last year you supported The Jacksons on their UK tour, how was that experience?

AMAZING! It was such an honour to be their special guest on their UK Tour. I made sure I had a front row seat for each of their sound checks, and I got a buzz when they would say, ‘Ok, it’s Denise’s turn now (to soundcheck)’. They remind me a lot of my family and it was wonderful to see the camaraderie between them.

You also took part in BBC's The Voice, how did you find that and how was Tom Jones as a coach?

It was a great experience that re-introduced me to the British public again. There was a lot of great talent on the show and working with Sir Tom Jones was a privilege.

What should fans expect who are coming to see you now you've been announced as the special guest for Billy Ocean's UK concert tour?

Well we’ve done quite a few dates already and it’s been a real blast. I perform a few songs from my new album including the single ‘Free Fall’, and for those that remember the 80’s – a Five Star medley! Billy has some wonderful fans and they are in for a real treat watching his show – a real legend!

Do you feel the music industry's attitude towards women has changed compared to when you started out?

I think women today feel more empowered and can stand just as tall as any male artist if their music hits the mark. It’s wonderful to see the likes of Adele remain true to herself and create such great music.

Are there any other projects you're currently involved with that you can share some details about or shed some light on?

I’m really just busy focusing on pushing this new album and seeing how far it takes me. It’s been a long time coming so I hope it makes an impression, excuse the pun! I will be working with my brothers and sisters again as Five Star perform at some festivals later this year, and I’ve recorded a solo version of a hit song we had called ‘The Slightest Touch’ which has been remixed by club wizards 7Th Heaven and will be released later in the summer.

Denise's debut solo album 'Imprint' is released June 1.
