Booty Luv are back with a new single in the shape of Black Widow and are ready to storm the charts once again.
The duo of Cherise and Nadia hit number two in the charts with their song Boogie 2nite, and with the new single on sale now, we spoke to Cherise about the song, writing for different singers and how their relationship has changed over the decade they’ve been together.
What can you tell us about Black Widow?
I think this one is different when it comes to concepts. This time we wanted to stay away from the positive, the disco balls and having a good time and touch on a darker concept. That’s how we came up with Black Widow. Basically, it’s about women out there that remind us of the spider. I know a lot of women like that (laughs). I thought it would be a fun experience touch on this subject.
The song’s been getting some great feedback, how does that make you feel?
Honestly, I’m so grateful for it and so is Nadia. We didn’t expect to be getting such positive feedback, especially in the clubs. No way did I think that it would be getting spun in the clubs so that is an achievement in itself and we’re over the moon about that.
So, whose boat is it in the video?
My manager actually builds and designs them. That’s just one of his jobs. We were lucky to get the boat. As you can see, it looks amazing. WE were able to stay on there for ten days and got a really good time out of it.
This is the first single you two have released in a little while. What brought you back?
People keep thinking that we were away, but we were busy behind the scenes. We’ve been writing and recording material, we’ve got about fifty to sixty songs now and we were just going back to the drawing board and change it up creatively. We were also going through a couple of legal things with the company, so we had to tie all those loose ends up before we could go back to the creative side. Now that’s all done with, it’s all about the music.
So with all those songs in the can, any talk of an album?
This time we’re just taking every day as it comes. Right now we’re concentrating on Black Widow and after that we’ll decide what we want to do. There are so many songs there, it’s going to take us ages to go through them! We’re going to go back to the drawing board again though after the single’s done its thing and see what we want to do.
You’ve also been writing songs for other singers. How does that compare to writing for yourself?
I think it’s a lot easier and it’s fun because you get to take one that person’s character and persona. You’re also thinking out of the box because you’re not writing for yourself and you can almost be braver with it because it’s not actually for you. It’s more refreshing to write for other artists than to write for yourself.
Anyone in particular you’d like to write for?
There’s so many. I always write with someone in mind. Inspiration wise, I’d say Emeli Sande, I’d love to write for her, but she’s so good she doesn’t need a writer (laughs). I’ve written a few songs that are kind of her style. I’m not too sure what’s going to happen, but we’re doing some pitches right now, so we’ll see.
You and Nadia have been working together for a decade now, so what’s that relationship been like?
When we first started out in Big Brovaz, we weren’t the best of friends. We were really against each other and didn’t like each other. In time though and with a load of communication, we love each other. We’re the best of friends and we’re like sisters. Before, we just weren’t interested in each other. Over the years we’ve found a deep love for each other.
Finishing up, what’s the plan for Booty Luv in 2013?
Collaborations, doing a few different projects with other people maybe? It’s all up in the air at the moment which is quite exciting because even I don’t know what’s going to happen this year. And I’m happy about that and excited about what might come off this year.
