Alyssa English

Hotly tipped new singer Alyssa English has some big boots to fill, as the niece of soul singer legend Sam Dees, and has been making a name for herself on the UK music scene following a collaboration with Beenie Man and Maxi Priest.

Female First got the opportunity to chat to Alyssa about her career, inspirations and just what to expect in the future.

What was it that drew you to the world of music?

My parents played a huge role in my earliest years of music by starting me in [the] Music For Young Children program. The majority of my family can sing or play some kind of instrument, and I used to love hurting everybody's ears, as I hammered out something harsh on my first keyboard!

How difficult would you say it is to get your name out there as a musician?

I think with the aid of social media, it has become much easier to put yourself out there! I personally love listening to other "breaking" artists. There's a special kind of passion behind a new artist that can't be faked.

Where do you draw inspiration from as an artist?

I find my inspiration for music everywhere. On the train, making tea, at the dentist’s office... I like to use things I'd come across or think about in everyday life! As well as my family background.

Do you feel an increased amount of pressure being the niece of Sam Dees?

I feel no pressure whatsoever! I always put my best work on the table, and having family support is fantastic!

Sam's worked with some massive names including Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin - who would you love to work with given the opportunity?

I would love to work with artists such as Iggy Azalea, Rihanna, or Adele!

Why did you decide to move to London from Canada to continue pursuing your dreams?

As a young teenager the idea of personal growth, and freedom was almost too appealing! I found Christmas break was just not long enough to see everything that makes this city so great!

You're soon to release your new EP 'Girlfriend', can you tell us about the creative process behind this record?

The EP is really a reflection of my early teens! Focused on the fun things I enjoy, and experiences I had first coming here! Part of the adventure was working on the EP in different places throughout the UK.

How important is it for you to have creative control in the work you produce?

Now that I'm more developed as an artist, I find it crucial to relate and understand all elements to a song. The more of yourself you put into a track, the easier it is to see through someone else's eyes!

What have been some amazing moments in your journey as a musician so far?

I'd say the most amazing journey has been a musical one. Not too many people can say they remember how they were feeling on December 14th 2012. Every song I've worked on has become a part of me I'll never forget!

Where do you hope to be by this time next year?

This time next year, I hope to be a few strides ahead, touring again meeting new people and finding new inspiration.

What's the big aim?

Success to me is as simple as hearing someone blasting my song in their car as I drive past, knowing that I've made someone laugh, or smile through my music!

Finally, do you have any other projects you're currently involved with that you can share some details about?

Watch this space, [I'm] very excited.

Alyssa English's 'Girlfriend' EP is out now.
