Its not often you hear a band and find it impossible to compare them to someone else, granted there are a lot of new bands emerging at the moment, but most of them sound like a clone of everyone else, however The Asteroids Galaxy Tour really are one of a kind.I caught up with lead singer Mette Lindberg to find out more about this phenomenal new band, and with their debut album out early next year; 2009 looks set to be the year of The Asteroids!
What have you been up to this week?
Well my boyfriend just moved in with me so Im painting and getting rid of all my old stuff that is taking up space; its a very good feeling!
Is it hard deciding what to keep and what to throw away? I can never throw anything away!
No usually I cant because Im a collector and I have loads of boxes and small things all over the place from when I was younger and its just like a museum in my house but its really nice and people love coming to my home because its very colourful, but now Im getting rid of some of it!
For anyone who hasnt heard of you before, how would you describe your sound?
Well actually its tough to answer that because I think its a mix of a lot of things; it has some Soul elements like The Horns and there is feeling in the music but at the same time it has some Funk and the Vocals are Rock or Pop so I think its got a lot of different things so its hard to say.
What makes you different from all the other bands trying to make it onto the music scene at the moment?
If you listen to our music its very different from lots of other bands and its seen as electronica which in Denmark is very popular. I know that in England you have Amy Winehouse and Duffy but I dont think we sound like them.
I think its a got a very new sound, its not trying to be something thats already around, its trying to bring something fresh.
Who do you look up to within the music industry?
For me I never really had someone that I admired; I wasnt into the boy band thing and I never had one person that was it for me. But I listened to a lot of Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder when I was younger and I also had a period of liking Bjork when I was about 12.
I think I admire people that can continue making good music and keep refreshing themselves and enjoying making the music because I think thats really tough work. I like Beck and also a lot of Dangermouse and I also like Damon Albarn and Gorrilaz; stuff like that.
Is there anyone youre not a big fan of?
Well I dont like the American high school movies and the music they use in them with the guitars I hate that! Its the most annoying thing, I think its called Emo music, Im sure they are nice people but it just frustrates me.
So you formed just over a year ago, have the past 12 months been hectic for you?
Yes! But I hope that this is just the beginning but everything takes time to understand. For example I have to learn to sing in another language and work out what things mean. as well as having to understand the music industry and work out what is and isnt fair.
Also, its tough work having to stay up until a song is finished but if you are doing something you love doing, its still hard work but you dont mind it because I love it.
I know that in the future were going to tour and play a lot and do a lot of interviews which is really hard because youre surrounded by strangers all the time. We used to just work close together in the studio and at home.
What does the next year hold for you?
'The Sun Ain't Shining No More is being released in September then we have one more single coming out and then in January/February we have the new album coming out in the UK. Then were going to tour the album and hopefully get to play all over the world! It takes a long time but we just want to do it all!
Where would you like to be in 10 years time?
I would love to be happy. Thats the most important thing. I want to still feel like myself even though Im doing what Im doing, I want to enjoy my life and not be someone else and stay true to myself even though I have people over me all the time.
How did you come up with your band name?
Its the trumpet player Miloud; hes a really funny guy and is full of crazy sayings, and is a very colourful person and comes up with really funny things, as well as beautiful things too.
So it was him who came up with The Asteroids Galaxy Tour so there it can be used to refer to the galaxy or for travelling within the mind.
How did you all meet?
Well Lars who plays bass and keys has been in a band with me before then we stopped playing and we were just friends but then we were both still doing music separately then one day he called me and said; you have to listen to this I want you to sing on it! So I listened and they way he produced the music was just what I had been looking for and then we started working day and night in a small flat recording songs and came up with everything.
Then things started to happen as people started to listen to the music and we gathered the band through old friends and people we knew so we are a due but then again the people playing with us are people we like and know who love the music so its more of a collective. We tend to ask people who have a unique sound, even though we tell them what to play, they still manage to bring themselves into the music.
We ask everyone we interview to come up with a question for the next person we interview....and Konnie Huqwants to know; when did some one last see you naked and why?
It was today because I live with my boyfriend! I hope its not strangers through the windows!
Can you think of a question for us to ask the next person we interview?
Do you wash your hands every time you go to the bathroom?
