Airbourne are a four piece Australian outfit who are ready to give the likes of AC/DC and Metallica a good run for their money… as they played their first set at Sonisphere this weekend, we caught up with Justin and David for a chat.
Hey guys, how does it feel to be here at Sonisphere?
We only just got here but we’re excited and can’t wait to be on stage later today.
Did you play any of the other Sonispheres in Europe?
No, we flew in from the U.S. and couldn’t play any of the other countries because we’re recordning a new album.
That sounds exciting. Are you going to stick around and watch some of the other bands, and if so, which ones are you most looking forward to seeing?
We would like to see Heaven & Hell and Metallica, but we’re leaving the U.K. again today so unfortunately we’ll miss them.
I know two members of the band are brothers. Is there a lot of sibling rivalry going on?
Not really. We all live together and it’s natural that there will be some arguments but it’s not real rivalry; we all just get along.
Did you go through many other names for the band before you settled on Airbourne?
The brothers may have discussed other names before I joined the band, but since then it’s always been Airbourne but it’s always been that from the very start I think.
What’s your opinion on Machine Head pulling out of the UK sonisphere?
We didn’t know about that.
Well, apparently Machine Head have played in the third slot on Sunday for all the other Sonispheres, but Limp Bizkit announced they would be able to do the UK Sonisphere, and Machine Head were told they would have to perform before Limp Bizkit,
Machine Head are good guys, it’s their right to do whatever they want.
You often get compared to bands like ACDC whose music is still very popular today. Why do you think that is?
Being compared to ACDC is an honour, they’re our inspiration and the greatest band of all time. The classic rock sound is definitely coming back. It had been away for a while but it’s still very popular.
So it has something that appeals to the younger generations too?
Oh yeah definitely.
You’ve supported some very big bands in the past. Who would you most want to warm up for, and who would you want to have warm up for you?
We supported to the Rolling Stones, but they probably wouldn’t support us. We’d like to do that again. There’s a UK band called the Stone Gods we like so probably them to support us.
So you’re from Australia, recording in the states, but playing in the UK. Do you have any good cures for jetlag?
There’s no cure for jetlag. We just go on stage and give it all.
What can the crowd expect from you today?
A very energetic, hot and sweaty performance,
No pyrotechnique?
We are the pyro.
Are you going to tour the UK in the near future?
We’re just recording a new album which will be out early next year and then we’ll come to the UK for a tour.
So what are the rest of your plans for 2009?
We’ll go back home and go on tour there and then finish our album.
And finally, do you have any other questions you would want me to ask the next band I speak to?
Just what their plans are for the rest of the year,
That’s great, thanks for your time and enjoy the rest of your day.
Thank you too and good luck with the rest of the interviews.
