With a place left in the Orange unsignedAct with Sony Ericsson competition semi-finals up for grabs, pretty boys SleeperCell are hoping to be given a second chance in Channel 4âs hit TV talent show.
Despite being plagued by comments from the judges that singer Barnaby would be better off without the rest of his band, I caught up with Kyle Orton to find out what the boys have been up to since getting booted off the show, whatâs next for them, and crucially, to try and convince him to buy me a new dress!
Hey hot stuff, how are things going for you?
Things are pretty good actually as we have been doing quite a few gigs, then had a break over Christmas and New Year and now things are kicking off again.
So what have you been getting up to since leaving the show?
We have been writing more stuff and practising and gigging trying to keep up with the publicity and say Hi to all our new fans too!
I love it! So now that you are out of the show, who would you like to see win, that is of course, unless you get back on the bill in the wildcard show?
I would really like to see Toby Sebastian win. Thatâs just me personally but I know that we all, as a band, all really like Hip Parade. [FF: Woo, theyâre my favourite too!] Yeah, they are all really nice guys too.
So, to anyone who needs to get their ears working and check you out, how would you sum up your band in five words?
I have no idea! I would say we are a five piece. [FF: Ooh, I like what you did there!] Despite the fact that all the judges wanted from us was a one piece.
How did you feel when the judges were saying âBarnaby, we want you on your ownâ?
It was really quite hurtful because we are a band. Barnaby has stuck up for us in interviews and on TV they didnât really show the whole story so painted me out to be a bit of a twat basically.
We donât think you are! We think that if youâre a band, youâre a band, and they should accept that. So to prove how great you are, tell me what sets you apart from some of the other acts on the music scene at the moment?
I think what it is would be our character. When we are in interviews we suck but backstage and onstage we love to have fun and push our fun onto everyone and rock out.
You can see that from youâre performances, but how did the band come to form in the first place?
Well we originally began as a three-piece in our high school when we first started our instruments, and then Barnaby came over from America and I realised that he could sing and asked him to sing for our band and then about a year later we realised there was still something missing and thatâs when we found Pat and asked him to join.
Aww, what a lovely story! So who are a few of your musical influences?
My personal ones are a band called Mayday Parade who I really love. They have two vocalists and they are really happy, upbeat music so I try to learn things from them. I know Barnaby is hugely influenced by Steven Tyler from Aerosmith. I think Matt likes classic rock like Led Zeppelin and Guns N Roses whilst Rob and Pat are more of a mix of everything really!
So, so given the chance, if you could support any band in the world, who would it be?
I was really gutted the week we went out because I realised that we missed out on McFly who were on the week after because we really like them. I reckon as a band we would love to tour with Foo Fighters because we all love them.
Because Foo Fighters are amazing! So, now we are going to challenge your mind with three âdeepâ questions⦠are you ready?
Oh man, Iâm really bad at these!
Well try your best! Firstly, name an experience with an animal youâll never forget?
Oh dear, I feel like I need to perform. Once I put my cat on my head because it was shoulder trained and I wanted to find out if it would sit on my head, but it just dug its claws in and I was spinning around with a cat on my head.
Hmm, right. Get that on YouTube. So moving swiftly on, what is the most expensive thing you have ever bought?
I havenât really bought that many expensive things, [FF: Well I have seen this dress I want which is a tad expensive if you want to start now?] Haha, my dad buys most of my things, so I canât really offer anything there, but if I had to choose it would probably be my amp which cost £1,000.
What! You could have bought me like 10 dresses with £1,000. Thatâs crazy!
Well, Iâll tell you what, if music doesnât pick up, Iâll sell my amp and I will buy you five dresses.
Brilliant! You have a deal my friend. So finally; does a person have to be considered important to be assassinated, rather than just plain murdered?
I donât know! Is assassinated when you pay someone to do it? [FF: Iâm not sure, isnât that Hitman?] Oh I donât know then.
Fair enough. Well we ask everyone we interview to come up with a question for the next person we interview and Klaus Says Buy The Record wants to know what is the inspiration for the left nipple protector?
Oh man, [FF: we donât even know what that means] If you go on our MySpace we have our Orange Unsigned videos on our page and there is one where we had to invent something for the show and we invented a left nipple protector which came about because Barnaby and Rob had some creativity time outside band practise away from us and we donât actually know why it came about. Hum.
Okay, on that note I shall sign off. Bye Bye.
Bye!
