Mcfly have enjoyed seven massive Number 1 singles and two Number 1 albums since they first bounced onto the pop scene in 2004 and now with their own record label and brand new rock-inspired 6th album it seems Danny, Tom, Dougie and Harry are all grown up.
Female First caught up with the guys to find out all about their new album, what it's like finally going it alone and their plans for summer.
Is it true you're giving away your next album free with a newspaper? And why did you decide to do that?
Harry: It is very true. We're giving it away on 20th July with the Mail on Sunday. It's a really exciting thing for us to be doing because it means we can get our album out to almost 3 million people in just one day which is obviously an incredible opportunity because we are so proud of this album.
We feel it's the best album we've ever ever made and it's important to us that as many people as possible listen to it and that's the opportunity we've got with the Mail on Sunday. You've also recently split from your record company and set up your own label. What was your thinking behind that?
Harry:We had the opportunity to leave just after Christmas so although we had some creative differences we left on really good terms. It allowed us to have complete creative control over the music on the album, the artwork and the videos and everything.
We just wanted to take control of everything which also means we can do things a bit differently to the way we've done things in the past. Things like giving our album away free is something would never have been able to do before.Danny: Even recording our album- we went over to Austrailia for ten weeks with no deadlines or anything. That was an opportunity that came from doing it ourselves. So has the new album got a different sound from the others then?
Danny: Obviously it does sound a little bit different but we've been wanting to make this album since we started. It sort of how we heard it in our heads from the beginning.
We write a song and we hear it in our heads how we want it to be produced and this album's come out exactly how we heard it and that for us is just amazing. There were no compromises and we're really proud of it and feel its probably the best album we've done.
Harry:And we're also really looking forward to playing the songs live at all the festivals over the summer and we've got this itunes festival coming up too. That's going to be great fun. There are loads of different acts playing there so we're really looking forward to being involved in that.
What is this itunes festival all about?
Harry:Well it's basically a different show every night for 31 nights throughout July and there's some great bands playing. NERD kick it off and there's Paul Weller, The Zutons, The Guillemots- lots of amazing bands. And you can also download the songs afterwards too which is great. And also the night we're playing you will be able to go and watch the show in Vue cinemas. So if you can't get to London you can go to your local cinema and watch it live there which is something really new and exciting.
Mcfly will be playing this years itunes festival on 24th July. For free tickets check out www.ituneslive.co.uk. The itunes concerts are for over 16s only.
