Laura Comfort is poised to set the music world alight with her new single It Hurts, which is produced John Ryan; who worked with Santana.
I caught up with the singer to talk about her new record, any album plans and what lies ahead in the new year
- It Hurts is your new single so what we can expect from the new record? Why was this the first song to be release from the new album?
.I wrote this new album 'Don't Ignore Me' during an emotionally challenging time after a long-term relationship ended so I hope all my songs have thought-provoking lyrics and catchy melodies but some of the songs are also very personal to me.
'It Hurts' is the most intensely emotional song on the album so I wanted to release it first.
- The lyrics are incredibly personal so I was wondering what inspired you to write this song - did you use personal experience?
I wrote ' It Hurts' after a break up with someone I'd been with most of my life so my emotions were very raw while I was writing it.
- The song is produced by John Ryan, who worked with Santana, so how did you find working with him? How did the collaboration come about?
I was introduced to John Ryan through my radio plugger and it's been a fantastic experience working with him because there is mutual respect and he knows how to bring out the best in my songs.
- Is there an album in the pipeline? If so what can we expect from it?
I have many new songs in the pipeline but right now I'm focused on finishing production on this current album which will be out in the new year.
- How would you describe your sound? What or who influences your music?
The style of my music is hard to define because it's a fusion of folk, pop, rock and country but it falls under the acoustic-pop umbrella.
Many different artists have influenced me including the Beatles, Madonna, Fleetwood mac, James Taylor etc
- How much was music a part of your life when you were growing up? Where your parents musical?
Growing up in my family we always had music and singing in the house with my mother on piano and my father on guitar. I was encouraged to perform from a very young age.
- You graduated from Harvard before kicking off a career in financial journalism so what made you make the switch to music?
While I was studying at Harvard I was in a successful band at the time, so I never stopped singing I just treated it more as a profession instead of a hobby once my first single was in the charts, so I dropped my other profession and went into music full time without looking back.
- How have you found the transition? And how excited are you at the response to your music so far?
I am so excited by the response to my new album, 'It Hurts.' It has been overwhelmingly positive and seems to have touched so many people who can relate to the lyrics and emotions in my song.
- You are also behind the website www.ithhurts.so so can you tell me a little bit about that and what inspired you to set it up?
I started www.ithurts.so so all women who have been hurt like me can share their stories and experiences and help each other as well as realize how many other people are going through the same experience.
- 2011 is coming to close so what music have you been enjoying this year?
This year I have enjoyed all sorts of music from Rihanna to Ed Sherran depending on what mood I am in at the moment..
- Finally what’s next for you?
Next year I will be lining up a Live tour, shooting a new video on the west coast, and releasing in America so it should be an exciting year!
