FranKo
FranKo look like they’re going to be making waves on the UK music scene this year… not only are they super talented, but mega hotties too; I caught up with the band to find out a little more about the foursome behind the music.
We are proper 100% loving your super hot new record…tell us a bit about the inspiration behind it…
Its funny that the single turned out to be “Night Time” and “Today”, Today is about that feeling you get when everything’s just going right, granted it doesn’t happen every day but when it does, boy does it feel good. Night Time has an edgier sound, much like when you’re out and it’s dark you feel a little bit more on edge and cautious, either that or your smashed and you couldn’t care less!
To anyone who hasn’t heard of you yet, how would you describe your sound?
We were told the other night we sounded a bit like Rage Against the Machine which we were pretty chuffed about, we have also been told we sound like Franz Ferdinand and Billy Talent, it’s hard for us to see who we sound like because when you write the music yourself you don’t like to be put in a box and be thought to sound like anyone else.
If you were going to give us just one song of yours to listen to so that you would become our new favourite singer, what would it be?
At the moment it would have to be “Love for Fame”, it’s one of the newer ones and every time we play it goes down a storm.
If you could cover another band’s song, what would it be?
Id feel uncomfortable covering a band which I idolized songs, and I feel that some songs should be left uncovered. If I had to pick a song I’d pick Mister Psycho by Space but we would do it our way, and make it sound like a FranKo track.
And can you sum up your good selves in just five words?
Explosive and Entertaining, Something different
What makes you stand out from the crowd?
We all play our own instruments and have written 100% of our songs, it’s hard to put your finger on bands that we sound like, our music combines mixed influences and the outcome is somewhat poppy, quirky and alternative.
You know we’re having a bit of an economic crisis here at the moment, if people wanted to spend their last £10 on a cd this weekend, why should they buy yours?
The variety of our album, it ranges from radio friendly anthems to quirky, darker B sides which I often find when I buy an album I fall in love with. Also you could buy our double A side single, two A sides for the price of one.
What three bands would you have to headline your dream festival?
Bring the Beatles back from the dead and have Elbow and Of Montreal supporting them, if any of the above can’t make the gig we would happily fill the slot!
What has been your favourite musical memory to date?
Writing Love For Fame, any songwriter will agree that when you make a song that you have fallen in love with your naturally buzzing for the next couple of days.
If all of the bands equipment was on fire, what one piece would you save and why?
Richards Guitar head, he never lets anyone else carry it from gig to gig, it’s his baby and if it were to get lost in a fire Richard would never be the same.
Who do you think is the greatest artist around at the moment?
I really liked The Arctic Monkeys new single, Also Of Montreal’s new(ish) album is great, Kevin Barnes is a really creative lyricist.
If you could only listen to one CD for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Sergeant Peppers lonely hearts Club Band, who can’t love that album! I remember getting taught about the tracks at school and thinking “God this is boring!” it wasn’t until I discovered it for myself that I realized how incredible each track on the album is. It was like I was appreciating music on a whole new level when I first heard it, it’s also the reason I learnt the bass.
Okay, now we want to ask you some random questions; Tell me about the most terrifying experience of your life…
When I was about 10 I got stranded in the sea with my brother who was about 11 in a canoe, we were getting further and further away from the shore and could get back to it, at that age I honestly thought I was going to die.
What’s the most stupid purchase you’ve ever made?
A lamp made completely out of circuit boards that I got from a Camden market.
Why go to the top of a tall building, only to put money in binoculars and look at things on the ground?
To see which tall people are going bald.
