D.R.U.G.S.

D.R.U.G.S.

On the Friday at Donington, we caught up with most of D.R.U.G.S. (Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows). We chatted to them about the band, the Warped Tour and the origin of the band name.

-How did you enjoy your set?
Brilliant, it was great. Some of us, it was our first time playing Download so we were stoked to be here. We had some technical difficulties, but probably no-one else noticed besides us.

-For those of you who haved played before, how did it compare?
Oh, this was awesome. It was awesome in '06, obviously these were with different bands because we're still relatively new.

In '08 we played early and I felt like s***. This is redeeming for me. The whole second second, the guitar didn't work. We made do, put on a happy face. Overall it went well.

-Is there a different mentality for a festival?
It's a little different. It's a lot of work to win people over sometimes, and you may not get a soundcheck.

You just set up quick, you might be using stuff you haven't picked up before. You have to be willing to just roll with the punches.

-Does it affect how you put together a set-list?
Yeah, definitely. We've got a time limit, so we have to cut some songs out.

-Are you getting to watch any other bands?
Yeah, I think a couple of us are going to see The Darkness, maybe KORN.

-Where did the idea for the band name to come from?
Well, we wanted something that was provacative and would make people think a little a bit.

When people first hear the name D.R.U.G.S. they're not going to forget about it. Then, to make people think we made it the acronym - Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows - to give it some depth.

-How did the band come together?
It started in the baby stages as just Craig and Nick writing some songs. Craig wanted to surround himself with some musicians who had done the whole band thing before. It grew from there.

-For anyone who isn't familiar with your sound, how would you describe it?
Awesome!

-Where do you draw on for your influences?
Definitely not Pantera! There's some theatrical bits, different orchestrasions.

I don't know, it sounds cheesy as f*** but you grow as musicians and learn from experiences in life. Everything, from bands to movies, makes it's way into your music. The whole theme I heard over and over again was Slipknot meets Harry Potter!

-You've just been touring the UK. How did that go?
Oh it was fantastic. It's our second time through as a band, and it's been unreal. It's surpassed our expectations every time. All the shows have been great, no complaints.

-Is there a big different between crowds here and in the States?
Well yeah, they have this weird accent...I don't get it! I don't see a major difference. UK fans like to party a bit more at shows. We have to be 21 to drink in America.

-Have you begun work on the follow-up to your debut yet?
I guess there's ideas in early stages, but we haven't really sat down and started writing together yet. Maybe after summertime.

I'm afraid to actually sit down and write together because it may be so profound it could be the end of the world. There's all the things people are saying about the world ending in 2012, and I don't want to blow the world up.

-Do you have any other touring plans this summer?
Yeah, we're doing the Warped Tour this summer, then going to Australia for Sound Wave. A lot of travelling.

-How does something like the Warped Tour compare to your own tours and festivals, because it's almost a hybrid?
The Warped Tour is strange, it's kind of a punk-rock summer camp. There's a lot of hanging out, a lot of barbecues, a lot of drinking. It's a good hang-out, good times.

-Do you have a final message for our readers?
Buy our record or get punched in the mouth! No, thanks to everyone who's bought the record and come to all the shows. We'll be back in the Fall sometime soon. Check us out online.
